German HLRS Building a Supercomputer with 10,000 64-Core AMD “Rome” Processors

NEWS

Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum (or HLRS for short and based in Stuttgart, Germany), which translates to High Performance Computing Center, is building a supercomputer called “Hawk” powered by 10,000 of the recently previewed EPYC “Rome” 64 core processors for a total of 640,000 cores and 1,280,000 threads.

AMD Previews EPYC “Rome” Processors with up to 64 Cores at 2.35 GHz

NEWS

AMD is really chasing the high core counts with their latest processors, codenamed Rome, being previewed with up to 64 cores. The first generation EPYC multi-core modules, or MCMs, were four CPU dies in one processor – essentially a 4P module.

Rome takes that a step further by including up to eight 7 nm Zen 2-based dies, scattered up to four per side around a central 14 nm I/O die which handles the uncore. These dies communicate using AMD’s second generation Infinity Fabric architecture without the need for an interposer.
